After Caterina had met Eugenio from the house down the hill and moved away to America, Roberto's family later occupied this house. Roberto explains that the angled metal cable in the house's right hand corner indicates that this house was built after one of the terrible earthquakes that have often rocked this region.

The cable, which runs across the wall, was an innovation intended to keep the house from shaking apart when the ground roiled. The great earthquake in Naples and Calabria of July 26, 1805, killed an estimated 25,000 people. Another in Calabria on February 4, 1783, killed some 50,000 people.
