This rates quite high on the official coolness scale. As the video’s Vimeo page explains this is a visualisation of the northern European airspace returning to use after being closed due to volcanic ash out of Iceland.

God hates figs

I finally got around to uploading to YouTube this video of a very fun counter-protest. When the hatemongers from Westboro Baptist Church announced they were coming to Charleston, W.Va., Covenant House gathered a host of area folk for a flashy response in early April as the Westborians uncorked their usual ‘God Hates Figs‘ bit. (Though [...]
Random Joy
April 26, 2010
In the category of ‘Random Eruptions of Joy in Public Spaces,’ I submit this video. The group Naturally 7, traveling on a Paris subway one cold day, enlivens the local space-time continuum with an a cappela version of the Phil Collins song “In the Air Tonight.” Watch as some of the Parisiens first perk up [...]
On war and recycling

To view video and story, click image or this link. If you recycle (and if you recycle at the Slack Street center in Charleston, W.Va.) here’s a video and story I did for the Sunday Gazette-Mail that portrays the guys behind the scenes who sort all the stuff we spit out from our consumerist lives. [...]
Hitler’s mad. Again.
April 22, 2010
This might not be up for long, so enjoy while it is. I don’t usually go in for parodies that make use of Hitler because there’s just so much you can take of the guy, even when making fun, before your brain starts unspooling pictures of the reality of how he cocked up tens of millions of lives in so many evil ways. But this clip has been a favorite of parodists and this parody about parodies is about as meta as the Web gets.
Miner memorial

But some folks e-mailed to the Charleston Gazette to say their older computers could not play the Flash file of this memorial slideshow to the 29 miners, ages 20 to 61, who died in the April 5, 2010, explosion at the Massey Energy Upper Big Branch Mine near Montcoal, West Virginia. So, here’s a YouTube version.
Moment of Discovery
April 18, 2010
Here’s an exercise to get the mental muscles moving in the AM. Take a look at this thoroughly delightful, very short and genuinely sweet video. Then imagine – interpolating and injecting Sarah Palin’s vapid, vitriolic, look-at-me, Know Nothing, wolf-hunting-from-helicopters-global-warming-denying-wink-wink-world view into the mix. That is to say, into the mix of programs on the Discovery [...]
Tina Fey, Hooray
April 12, 2010
While watching Rachel Maddow’s report tonight on the nuclear summit breakthrough today in D.C., with Ukraine agreeing to eliminate its nuclear stockpiles, it is hard – no, it’s impossible – to imagine someone with the playground brainpower of Sarah Palin managing to pull off something as internationally important as this. It is good to have [...]
Becoming a Birdman
April 11, 2010
I finally figured out what I am going to do when I retire. Here’s my mentor, the Birdman of Lisbon, Portugal — Claudio Montuori. (Thanks, Marco.)
