“When I get sick of what men do, I have only to walk a few steps in another direction to see what spiders do. Or what the weather does. This sustains me very well indeed.”

One should be able to use that thought also to regain faith in mankind’s goodness and the fact that all creatures have a flip side. Spiders are very simple creatures. turn the clock forward on that picture of the beautiful spider web (and realize that it is essentially a trap to lure prey) as the spider paralyzes its prey for consumption. Mankind is a far more complex creature that requires the other creatures gazing upon its handiwork to step back and try to look at the whole. Think of the beauty of the spider’s web as a metaphor for a mechanical heart, sculpture or painting. If you want to take the spider-web’s beauty and function in to consideration then compare it with the beauty of a finely crafted weapon be it a sword or a gun.

Point taken, Rich. But I think the thrust of White’s quote is turning away from human folly, cruelty and willful meanness. Spiders may hunt prey, but only do it to survive and make more baby spiders, not to blow up a fellow spider’s web because it didn’t like which spider church he went to. Or that he was a gay spider. ;-) But I do get your point. Nature is not a benign, cuddly place. Most, if not all, animals live in a constant state of alert anxiety when awake. There’s a reason that cute chipmunk darts like an arrow when he’s in the open. The hawk wants him for an appetizer.

HMMM… Chipmunk Satay… Thanks for the appetizer idea! :)
